40 THINGS TO DO INSTEAD OF MINDLESS PHONE SCROLLING
Let’s face it, we’ve all been there, mindlessly scrolling through our phones without any real purpose or intent. I
t’s become such a habit that sometimes we don’t even realize we’re doing it!
So, I decided to put together a list of 40 different things you can do instead of the endless scrolling, turning that wasted time into something fun, productive, or just plain enjoyable.
Trust me, I’ve been through the same struggle, and I’m here to share what worked for me!

1. Read a book
I know, I know. You’re probably thinking, “But I already read on my phone!” Well, I’m talking about the good ol’ fashioned paper-and-ink book. Trust me, there’s nothing quite like turning actual pages and getting lost in a story without any notifications or ads interrupting your reading flow.
2. Cook a new recipe
Have you always wanted to whip up some mouth-watering dishes but didn’t get the courage or time to try? Well, now’s your chance! Put down your phone and head to the kitchen to create a culinary masterpiece đ˛ Your taste buds will thank you!
3. Exercise
You don’t need a gym membership to stretch your legs and increase your heart rate. Join a local sports club, follow an online workout routine, or take those sneakers for a walk in your neighbourhood đââď¸ Whatever keeps your body moving and gets you off your phone!
4. Write in a journal
Grab a pen and journal and jot down your thoughts. It’s a fantastic way to express your feelings, clear your mind and reflect on your life. Plus, it’s therapeutic! Who needs a phone when you have such a cool, old-school way of keeping yourself engaged?
5. Plan your travel adventures
You know that dream vacation you’ve been thinking about for years? Now’s the perfect time to start planning it out. Research destinations, create an itinerary and save up some bucks. The memories you’ll make on this trip will be so much better than any social media post will ever be.
6. Try a DIY project
Why watch yet another cat video when you could actually build something with your own hands? Choose a DIY project that suits your interests and use your free time to create something unique, functional, or just plain fun!
7. Practice a new language
Who wouldn’t love the ability to converse in multiple languages? Download a language-learning app like Duolingo and start practicing a new language daily. You’ll be all set to impress your friends at that fancy French restaurant in no time.
8. Attend community events
Concerts, workshops, farmers markets – there’s so much happening around you that you might be missing out on! Check out local community events and make new friends while taking part in exciting activities.
9. Take up a hobby
Whether it’s painting, photography, gardening, or playing an instrument, exploring a new hobby is a fantastic way to invest your time in something rewarding and fulfilling. You never know, you might just discover a hidden talent!
10. Reconnect with friends and family
Trade the virtual connections for real-life connections. Instead of checking out their latest Instagram post, pick up the phone and give your friend a call. It’s so much more fulfilling to have a real conversatio
11.Try a new recipe
Getting lost in the world of mouthwatering recipes is way better than endlessly scrolling on your phone. Plus, it’s a chance to learn a new skill and treat your taste buds to new flavors. Cooking and baking are also great stress-relievers!
12. Meditate
Meditation is a fantastic way to clear your mind and improve your focus. Instead of scrolling, find a comfortable spot to sit and practice mindfulness for at least 10 minutes. You’d be surprised how refreshing it is for your mind to focus on the present moment
13.Listen to a podcast
There are so many incredible, informative podcasts out there! Pick a topic you’re interested in, or try something new. This is a great alternative to mindless scrolling, and you might learn a thing or two.
14.Volunteer your time
Give back to your community by volunteering for a local organization or charity. It’s a fulfilling experience, and you’ll be making a positive impact.
The Problem with Mindless Phone Scrolling
let’s take a minute to understand why mindless phone scrolling is problematic in the first place. There are several reasons:
- Time Waster: As I mentioned earlier, phone scrolling can be a real time-sucker. You might think you’re only checking your notifications, but then you get drawn into a conversation or start browsing through random content, and before you know it, you’ve wasted precious minutes (or hours) of your life.
- Mental Health Impact: Studies have shown that excessive phone use and being too connected to social media can be detrimental to our mental health. It might seem harmless on the surface, but constantly comparing ourselves to others, seeking validation, and feeling the pressure to present the ‘perfect’ version of our lives can lead to increased stress, anxiety, and even depression.
- Weakened Real-life Connections: The irony is that while we’re so connected digitally, we’re losing real-life connections. By investing so much time and energy into our online presence, we might be neglecting our friends, family, and even ourselves.
To Wrap Up
Practicing mindfulness is an amazing practice that helps us develop awareness, focus, and concentration, ultimately leading to an improved mental state that helps us be more present and engaged in our lives.
Instead of scrolling away your precious time, you could be:
- Cultivating a stronger sense of self-awareness
- Learning how to manage stress and negative emotions better
- Enhancing your focus and productivity
- Developing a deeper connection with yourself and the world around you.
